WIRELESS?

Wireless networking is almost exactly what it advertises, networked computers without the cabling of traditional ethernet. A portable computer can be used anywhere it can detect and access a wireless connection.

FLAVORS

Wireless connections come in three basic forms. The most common and well known is the system used for cell phones, microwave. Microwave can also be used for computer connections, but currently the most common type of wireless computer connection is radio. This is the system used by the wireless "routers" in many homes and businesses. The last type of wireless connection in common use today is infrarred, which owing to it's very limited range is only used for computer accessories or remote controls.

VERSATILITY

Most portable computers sold today can use one or more of these technologies. Laptops and "pads" come with radio wireless adaptors that can be used whenever a radio network is present. These same devices can be linked to a cell phone, or can be equipped with cellular adapters to tqake advantage of microwave communication. Finally, they can also connect to accessories like headphones, mice or keyboards that use infrared.
