WHY DO I NEED A NETWORK?
Your business has grown. You have expanded into several buildings in different parts of the city. You know the local area network made your office more efficient and profitable. Can you do the same thing when you have multiple offices? The answer is yes, by creating a wide area network or WAN. Using modern communications technologies, Inception Network Strategies can connect two different buildings in two totally different places, whether it’s down the street or halfway around the world. In most cases communication between the two sites is instantaneous. A WAN enables you to share up to the minute information with anyone in the world. It can also allow you to open new markets. Because a modern WAN typically uses the Internet, you can manage and even host a website that features your business, products, and services. A wide area connection can expand your customer base by putting your business online. Anybody with internet access anywhere on the planet can “shop at your store” from their desk, their laptop, or even their phone.
A SHORT OVERVIEW
Essentially a wide area network is a collection of local area networks connected together over any distance. A LAN with a connection to the Internet is actually part of the wide area network called the World Wide Web. For purposes of this discussion a WAN is typically a network that connects the individual offices of a business to other offices of the same (or a closely related) business. A lot of different technologies have been used over the years, most of them relying on long distance phone connections. Public access to the Internet, however, has radically changed the nature of wide area networks. A modern WAN takes advantage of the fact that today’s Internet connections are cheap and abundant, but unlike the open nature of the Internet in general a WAN is a relatively secure link between two locations. One of the most common of these secure connections is a Virtual Private Network (VPN). The VPN becomes a virtual Ethernet cable between the two LAN’s, thus allowing them to communicate with each other. The user may see little difference between connecting to a server in the next room or a laptop in China. Access to the various resources works just the same.
